Ed Ruscha - The End

Ed Ruscha's painting 'The End' differs from earlier examples by Alan Fletcher and John Baldessari, in that it is a painting of text, in other words both image and text become inseparable, unable to exist singularly. With a clear reference to the cinema and moving image, this image, in its flickering, fading light references a sense of mortality that both literally translates to the end of a film as well as perhaps life, in a wider context.
